The Effects of Aromatherapy with peppermint on Anxiety of Patients Undergoing endoscopy

Background: Anxiety is one the main problems of patients on waiting list for endoscopic procedures. Previous studies have indicated adverse effects of anxiety on these patients. The aim of this study was to Investigation of the effect of aromatherapy with peppermint essential oil on anxiety of colonoscopy.
Methods: Design of this study is a randomized controlled clinical trial. A total of 50 patients randomly were allocated in to two groups of experimental and control. In order to data collection at first and half an hour before of colonoscopy demographic questionnaire and Spillberger questionnaire was filled out by the patients and then 10 minutes. Aromatherapy was perform in control group: who inhaled with nebulizer mask the usual odor of the ward and experimental group: who inhaled with nebulizer mask containing three drops of 100% Lavender essential oil. Again immediately after aromatherapy and after colonoscopy Spillberger questionnaire was filled. Using SPSS 16 software, the data was described via mean, standard deviation and percent, and analyzed by using independent t-test, paired t-test, Chi-square, Fisher and Anova.
Results: The mean anxiety scores in the aromatherapy group at the three measurement time points were 52.1±6/9,45.5±4.0 and 48.2±7.5 while these values in the control group were 52.4 ± 7.2, 50.1 ± 5.9 and 49.1 ± 5.2, respectively. After the intervention there was a significant difference between the groups regarding the mean anxiety score (P = 0.002). Average score changes of anxiety at the admitted with after intervention was a significant difference between the two group (p˂0.0001).
Conclusions: Inhalation of aromatherapy with peppermint significantly reduces state anxiety amongst patients who are going to undergo a colonoscopy. Therefore, peppermint aromatherapy can be used to reduce patients’ anxiety in clinical settings.
